Technology, a Means to an End
Like most people, I use technology every day. I have a phone, I have a personal computer (many), I have a DVR. But my drive is always to use technology in the smartest way to enhance my life the way that technology was intended
Many technology people focus too much on the technology and not enough on what problem the technology is actually supposed to solve. Don’t get me wrong, I love technology but I feel it is there to serve a purpose. The technology is there to improve on the environment and not the other way around. So it’s not how cool a new computer is but more what can the computer do for me. Technology is a means to an end.
Another concept I believe in is the transparency of technology. It should be integrated into the environment more than showpieces. I think a cool piece of technology is defined on how well it anticipates your needs and how out-of-sight it is. An example would be the concept of automatic groceries. Some people think it would be cool that when you are out of milk, you could punch a button on the fridge and it will automatically put milk on the grocery list. I think it’s more important that the fridge already knows you are low on milk and puts in the order for more to be delivered automatically without your prompting.
With my views on technology, some have asked me about toys and gadgets I use personally. Being a technology geek, I always have several on-going projects that help integrate technology into my daily life to make things better at home and when out and about. Although it is always a challenge to use exciting, bleeding-edge technology that is also easy for normal people to use, I think I have found a balance when using cool technology but still keeping them what some geeks call WFDs (Wife-Friendly Devices) which means that even mere mortals can use them. This blog is to document that path to enlightenment and bliss and hopefully inspire a few along the way.
